Options flow refers to real-time data on executed options trades — contract, strike, expiration, size, and whether the trade printed at the bid or the ask — surfaced by scanners that flag unusually large or unusually structured activity. Flow data reports what was traded, never why it was traded.
An options contract grants the right, not the obligation, to buy (a call) or sell (a put) 100 shares of an underlying stock at a fixed strike price before a stated expiration. The price paid for that right is the premium. That 100-share multiplier is the source of most of the confusion in options flow headlines.
Why the Headline Number Overstates the Risk
When coverage describes a “multi-million dollar bullish bet,” the figure quoted is almost always notional value — the market value of the shares the contracts control — rather than the cash the trader actually put at risk.
The arithmetic:
Notional value = Contracts × 100 shares × Strike price
Premium paid = Contracts × 100 shares × Premium per share
A trader buying 5,000 call contracts at a $120 strike controls 500,000 shares with a notional value of $60 million. If the premium is $2.40 per share, the actual cash outlay is $1.2 million. The headline reports $60 million. The trader risked 2% of that.
Notional value and premium paid can differ by a factor of ten or more, and the ratio depends on how far out-of-the-money the strike sits and how much time remains. A headline that does not specify which figure it is quoting is not describing the trader's risk.
What Flow Data Structurally Cannot Show
Flow scanners read the consolidated tape. The tape records executions, not intentions. Four things are missing from every alert:
Whether the trade opened or closed a position. A large call purchase can be a new bullish bet or a trader buying back calls they previously sold. Open interest data resolves this the following day, not in real time.
Whether it is one leg of a multi-leg structure. Institutional participants routinely trade spreads — buying one option and simultaneously selling another to reduce cost or cap risk. A scanner that flags the purchased leg without the sold leg reports a directional bet where a defined-risk structure exists. Complex orders often print as separate legs.
What else the trader holds. A fund that owns 2 million shares of a stock might buy puts as insurance or sell calls against the position to generate income. Both appear in flow data. Neither is a directional forecast; both are risk management applied to a position the scanner cannot see.
Who initiated it. Trades printing at the ask are commonly inferred as buyer-initiated, but that inference is imperfect, particularly for multi-leg orders and auction executions.
Market Makers and the Price Move That Follows
There is a mechanical effect worth understanding separately.
Every options trade has a counterparty, and for large trades that counterparty is usually a market maker — a firm obligated to provide two-sided quotes. Market makers do not take directional views; they earn the spread and neutralize the resulting exposure. Selling calls to a large buyer leaves them short calls, an exposure they offset by delta hedging: buying shares of the underlying stock in proportion to the position’s delta.
That hedging demand is real buying pressure in the stock, and it is unrelated to any opinion about the company. A stock that rises shortly after a large call print may be moving because of hedging mechanics rather than because informed money identified something. As the position moves and delta changes, the hedge is adjusted — which can amplify the move in either direction.
The scale makes this non-trivial. OCC cleared 1,550,557,103 options contracts in July 2026, and 2026 year-to-date average daily volume reached 70,820,829 contracts, up 23.9% from the 57,150,043 daily average over the same period in 2025. ETF options volume alone rose 59.1% year over year in July.
How to Read a Flow Alert in Practice
1. Identify which dollar figure is being quoted. If the report does not distinguish notional value from premium paid, assume notional. Divide by the strike price and 100 to recover the contract count, then look up the premium to estimate real cash at risk.
2. Check whether open interest rose or fell. An increase in open interest at that strike the following session indicates new positions were opened. A decrease indicates positions were closed. Volume alone cannot tell you which.
3. Look for the offsetting leg. Scan the same expiration for a similarly sized trade at a different strike executed at the same time. Its presence converts a “directional bet” into a spread with a capped payoff.
4. Check the filer’s disclosed equity position. Institutional holdings are reported quarterly on SEC Form 13F. If a fund already holds a large position in the name, options activity is at least as likely to be hedging as speculation.
5. Evaluate the business independently. If a flow alert makes a company interesting, the next step is examining revenue, margins, debt, competitive position and valuation — not sizing a position off the alert.
6. Treat the timing asymmetry seriously. By the time a trade is scanned, published, and read, the market maker’s hedge has already executed. Retail participants are reacting to the price effect, not front-running it.
Common Mistakes and Misconceptions
“A big bullish trade means someone knows something.” It means someone with capital established a position. Institutional participants hedge, arbitrage, roll expiring positions, and structure trades against holdings that are not visible in the print. Size measures capital deployed, not conviction.
“The dollar figure in the headline is what they risked.” It is usually notional value. Premium paid is frequently a small fraction of it, and the two are not interchangeable when assessing how much confidence the trade expresses.
“Unusual options activity is a leading indicator.” It is a record of an execution. Studies of the informational content of options order flow find that some categories carry predictive signal, but the effect is neither uniform nor reliably extractable after publication and hedging have already moved the price.
“Options flow shows institutional positioning.” It shows fragments. A fund’s total position spans equity holdings, multiple options expirations, and instruments that never appear on the options tape. A single print is a fragment of a structure, not the structure.
“The stock went up right after, so the trade was right.” Delta hedging by the market maker who sold the options can produce that move mechanically. Post-print price action is contaminated by the hedge, so it is weak evidence about the original trader’s thesis.
Example: Reconstructing a Headline
A report states: “Institutional trader places $60 million bullish options bet on a mid-cap stock.”
Step 1 — Recover the contract count. If the strike is $120, then $60,000,000 ÷ ($120 × 100) = 5,000 contracts.
Step 2 — Estimate real cash at risk. At a $2.40 premium, the outlay is 5,000 × 100 × $2.40 = $1,200,000. The headline overstates the capital committed by a factor of 50.
Step 3 — Check for the other leg. If 5,000 contracts at a $140 strike in the same expiration printed simultaneously on the sell side, the structure is a call debit spread. Maximum profit is capped at the difference between strikes minus net premium — a defined-risk, defined-reward position, not an unbounded bullish bet.
Step 4 — Check disclosed holdings. If the filer’s most recent Form 13F shows a large existing equity position, calls could be replacing shares to free up capital, or the visible leg could hedge a short position elsewhere.
Step 5 — Check open interest the next morning. If open interest at the $120 strike fell rather than rose, the trade closed an existing short call position. The “bullish bet” was an exit.
Five checks, and the $60 million bullish bet has become a $1.2 million defined-risk structure that may have closed an existing position. None of those checks required information unavailable to a retail investor. All of them were omitted from the headline.
