A tokenized real-world asset (RWA) is a blockchain-issued token that represents a claim on an off-chain asset — such as a government bond, a money market fund, private credit, or real estate — held by an issuer, custodian, or fund vehicle.
The token is not the asset. It is a claim on the asset, and the two are separate instruments with separate risk profiles. The underlying Treasury bill carries the credit of the US government. The token carries the credit of whoever issued it, the integrity of the code that governs it, and the depth of whatever market it trades in.
That distinction is the whole subject. A Treasury bill cannot trade at 26 cents on the dollar. A token claiming to represent one demonstrably can, and has — not because the Treasury defaulted, but because something in the wrapper broke.
How Tokenization Works
1. An issuer acquires and holds the underlying asset. A fund vehicle, trust, or special purpose entity takes ownership of the Treasury bills, loan portfolio, or property interest.
2. Tokens are issued against that holding. A smart contract mints tokens representing pro-rata claims. The contract governs transfers, and in most institutional structures restricts holding to allowlisted addresses that have passed identity checks.
3. A redemption mechanism connects the two. Holders can present tokens to the issuer for the underlying value, typically subject to minimum sizes, notice periods, and business-day settlement windows.
4. Tokens trade on secondary venues. Transfers settle on-chain continuously, including outside the hours the underlying asset’s market operates.
The redemption mechanism is what holds the token’s price near the asset’s value. When redemption is fast, cheap, and available to anyone, arbitrage keeps the two close. When redemption is slow, size-gated, restricted to allowlisted institutions, or suspended, the arbitrage link weakens and the token’s price is set by whoever is willing to trade it at that moment.

Totals vary by methodology. Counts that include platform-locked and off-chain-recorded positions reach roughly $60 billion across more than 7,000 products, while on-chain trackers report about $32 billion. The wider figure includes assets that are tokenized in a bookkeeping sense but do not trade.
The Four Risks in the Wrapper
Redemption and issuer credit risk. The token’s value rests on an issuer’s obligation to deliver the underlying asset or its cash value. If the issuer becomes insolvent, gates redemptions, or holds assets that turn out to be different from what was represented, the token reprices to reflect that — regardless of what a Treasury bill is worth.
Smart contract risk. Tokens are administered by code. A vulnerability, an oracle failure, or a compromised admin key can freeze transfers, misprice collateral, or permit unauthorized minting. The custody of the underlying asset does not protect against a defect in the contract that governs the claim.
Secondary market liquidity risk. A Treasury bill trades in one of the deepest markets in existence. Its token trades in a venue with a fraction of that depth. Selling a position that is large relative to available liquidity moves the price, and in a stress episode the bid can withdraw entirely while the underlying market functions normally.
Collateral leverage risk. This is the one that turns a local problem into a systemic one. Tokenized assets are widely used as collateral in on-chain lending. When collateral value falls, automated liquidation engines sell into the same market that is already falling, and positions borrowed against that collateral elsewhere unwind simultaneously. A modest decline becomes a cascade because the deleveraging is mechanical and correlated.
How to Evaluate a Tokenized Product
1. Identify the issuer and what the claim is against. “Backed by Treasuries” is a marketing statement. The question is which legal entity holds them, under what structure, and what the holder’s claim is if that entity fails.
2. Read the redemption terms specifically. Minimum redemption size, notice period, settlement window, eligibility restrictions, and the issuer’s right to suspend. A token redeemable only by allowlisted institutions in $100,000 blocks has a materially different liquidity profile from its quoted price.
3. Distinguish yield source from yield rate. A token paying the Treasury bill rate is passing through the underlying yield. A token paying substantially more is running a strategy, and that strategy is the actual risk being taken. Yield well above the underlying asset’s rate is compensation for something.
4. Check whether the contract has been audited, and by whom. An audit is evidence of review, not a guarantee of safety. Its absence is more informative than its presence.
5. Establish where secondary liquidity comes from. Identify who makes the market, at what size, and whether the depth is real or reflexive — provided by participants who will withdraw in exactly the conditions where it is needed.
6. Trace the leverage attached to the token. If a token is heavily used as lending collateral, its price behavior in a stress event is driven by liquidation mechanics rather than by the underlying asset’s value.
Common Mistakes and Misconceptions
“Tokenizing a safe asset produces a safe token.” The safety of a Treasury bill describes the Treasury bill. The token adds issuer credit, code, redemption, and liquidity risk on top. Those additions cannot be netted away by the underlying asset’s quality.
“Backed means fully collateralized and redeemable.” “Backed” is not a legal term with a fixed meaning. Structures range from bankruptcy-remote regulated fund vehicles to unaudited claims on an operating company’s balance sheet. The word is identical in both cases.
“A depeg means the underlying asset lost value.” Usually it does not. Most depegs are redemption failures, solvency doubts, or forced liquidation cascades. The underlying asset frequently performs exactly as expected while the claim on it does not.
“Twenty-four-seven trading is pure improvement.” Continuous trading means the token reprices during hours when the underlying market is closed and no arbitrage is possible. Price discovery without a functioning creation and redemption mechanism produces the largest deviations.
“Institutional adoption removes the risk.” Regulated fund wrappers with real custodians and daily disclosure genuinely reduce issuer risk relative to an unaudited protocol. They do not remove smart contract, liquidity, or leverage risk, and they do not make every product carrying the tokenization label equivalent.
“This is contained to crypto.” Tokenized Treasuries sit inside the short-term funding market, and the sponsors building these products include large traditional asset managers. Whether the connection is currently material is disputed; that it is being built is not.
Example: Stream Finance and the xUSD Failure
Stream Finance issued xUSD, marketed as a yield-bearing dollar-denominated token running a delta-neutral strategy at roughly 18% annualized. The design premise was that the yield came from market-neutral positioning rather than directional exposure.
In early November 2025, Stream disclosed approximately $93 million in losses at an external fund manager. Post-mortems traced much of the damage to exchange auto-deleveraging systems breaking the hedges during the October 10–11, 2025 liquidation cascade — the mechanism intended to keep the position market-neutral failed under precisely the conditions it was designed for. The disclosure landed one day after a separate $128 million protocol exploit, into a market already withdrawing risk.
xUSD fell to roughly $0.50, then to about $0.26 — a decline exceeding 77% from its dollar reference. Stream halted operations.
The contagion followed the collateral channel. Roughly $285 million in linked debt sat across other lending protocols. Stream held approximately 90% of the supply of another stablecoin, deUSD, and had borrowed heavily against it, producing a reflexive cross-protocol dependency. When Stream became distressed, deUSD depegged and its issuer wound it down.
Two lessons generalize. First, an 18% yield on a product presenting itself as dollar-stable was the risk disclosure — the strategy generating that spread was the actual instrument, and it failed. Second, the loss propagated through leverage and collateral relationships, not through the underlying assets. Nothing about the assets themselves required a $285 million cascade. The wrapper’s interconnection did.
When a tokenized product moves sharply, check whether the underlying asset moved. If the Treasury bill is unchanged and the token is down 30%, the problem is redemption, code, liquidity, or leverage — and the fix is not waiting for the asset to recover, because the asset never fell.
